Why mark drafts
Unfinished contracts, reports and designs get forwarded, printed and filed. A clear DRAFT mark stops a half-finished version from being signed, published or acted on by mistake. It is standard practice for legal documents, proposals, quotes that are still being negotiated and design proofs sent for feedback.
Draft stamp vs. watermark
A watermark runs diagonally behind the text on every page. A stamp is smaller and sits in a corner or margin, so the document stays easy to read while it is reviewed. Use a stamp when people need to comment on the content; use a watermark when you must make sure no page can be reused.
Tip for versions
Put the version number in the bottom text, e.g. "DRAFT v3", and change it every time you send a new round. It saves a lot of "which one is the latest?" emails.
Frequently asked questions
Which colour should a draft stamp be?
Anything that differs from the text colour works. Purple and grey are common because they read as neutral — not approved, not rejected.
How do I remove the draft stamp later?
Keep an unstamped master file. Stamp only the copies you send out for review.
